"The production for Neuroblaste was at a point where I was recording the ambiences and sound effects for the first batch of episodes. I knew there were going to be ambiences in Montreal, Dubai and several other international cities - including New York. It just so happened that I had been invited to a Boys' Birthday Weekend in NYC by my good friend E-man. The adventure coincided perfectly with my hankerin' for real sounds of The City.

Pitching 'Doctor*ology'

I was contacted by a production house in Montreal to do a “pitch” for a Discovery Channel TV show. But even when you have a great pitch, there are no guarantees you will get the job...

Doctorology stars Leslie Neilsen and aired its first episodes on the Discovery Channel in 2007. During its development, I was called upon to “pitch” for the music contract at the production house, Galafilm in Montreal.

In the music biz, a “pitch” is when a producer calls multiple composers to do an audition for the gig, which usually entails scoring a small portion of the film.

To pitch effectively, you need to get as much info as you can - so I went to the Galafilm offices, has a meeting with the director and did some spotting with her, discussing musical styles, direction, etc. The more specific you can get, the better your chances of winning the pitch.

In this case, the director gave me such references as music from the films Nacho Libre and Ocean's Eleven. This was the style there were looking for at that point in the development process.

I recorded the tracks at Goran Petrovic's awesome studio “Coolmoon” in Chateauguay, QC, with Goran himself on guitar, myself on drums and Rob Roy on bass. As you can hear from the excerpt, the tracks are a pretty cool hybrid of TJ Hooker gaiety, Nacho Libre stupour and 70s porn - exactly what the doctor - director - ordered.

So Did U Get the Gig or What

No.

Why? Because in the end, the music went a different direction and they would up “going with the guy we usually use.” Sometimes there are other reasons that you will never know about. Sometimes its just the axial tilt of the Earth or because someone had a crappy morning on the way to work. The point is, you do the best you can, but you are not in control.

The Moral of the Story, Kids

It doesn't matter how hard you can throw - your pitch can sometimes yield a swing and a miss. And that's ok.

I had a great time pitching for this. The benefits I have reaped have far outweighed the amount of time invested (about 4 full days):

I have a really cool collection of cop show porno tunes
we had a blast recording
I have a nifty excerpt for my portfolio
I made an excellent contact with a production house
several of the tracks went on to be licensed for another TV show

So, you never know what may happen, even if you don't get the job. Pitch hard, pitch smart - but keep pitching to the projects that you hold dear. This one was super cool.

This feature documentary tells the inside story of the rise and fall of Vivendi Universal and how it is tied to the epic tale of one of Canada's great family dynasties, the Bronfmans. Music by Tim Rideout.

Edgar Bronfman Jr. was the upstart heir to the Seagram whiskey billions. He set out to transform the company into a Hollywood and entertainment giant. In Paris, Jean-Marie Messier was labeled “the most ambitious empire-builder since Napoleon”.

At the height of the dot.com craze they merged their empires. For a brief shining moment, Vivendi Universal epitomized the thrilling promise of media convergence.

Instead, there was conflict and betrayal. For the Bronfman dynasty it was a calamity costing them $6 billion and their legendary whisky empire.

Produced by Radio-Canada, Neuroblaste is a sci-fi web series that takes place in Montreal, Dubai, New York and Argentina. A group of students make an amazing discovery while doing extra-curricular university research on Alzheimer's disease.

Based in fact-augmented fiction and written by Pierre-Michel Tremblay, Neuroblaste garners elements of its story from Montreal myth and legend surrounding the post-war CIA experiments at McGill University. Add in some robot mosquitoes, meddling kids, evil henchmen, gay lover's subplot and hot latina chicks and you've got an instant geek hit.

Originally conceived as a style excercise, the music is made entirely from sounds recorded during the filming process. The inherent challenge was to have the music retain a melodic sensibility while incorporating industrial-sounding elements to its sound palette.
